Virent cuts workforce from its biofuels division [Registered]

The start-up Virent recently announced that it has laid off 35 workers – roughly one-third of its workforce – from its biofuels division, as it narrows its focus to commercializing a chemical used to make renewable beverage bottles. After the restructuring, Virent employs 76 people. Virent has been working for the past decade to develop both renewable chemicals and renewable biofuels, including gasoline and jet fuel, from plant sugars.
