Vietnam – Record sugar output raises clamour for exports [Registered]

Sugar output from the 2011/12 crop is expected to reach a record 1.43 million tonnes, according to Do Thanh Liem, deputy chairman of the Vietnam Sugar and Sugarcane Association. This is 280,000 tonnes higher than last year. With more than 100,000 tonnes stockpiled at sugar mills and 70,000 tonnes imported under Vietnam’s World Trade Organisation commitments, there is likely to be an excess of 300,000 tonnes. According to Int Sugar Organisation, sugar consumption in 2011/12 is expected to be 1.215 million tonnes.
