In 1942 Wheeler noted that new varieties to replace Uba were available: the grower was interested in sugar and cane yields, ratooning and the value of each new variety. The miller, with a factory set for Uba, “will need to consider whether any alteration in the capacities of the various departments will have to be made”. Bond in 1995 lists the following factors for the development of future varieties: drought resistance, impact on mechanisation, lodging, pest and disease resistance, cutting age, and burning vs. trashing.
