US sugar industry contracts but productivity and revenue growth keeps apace [Registered]

Over the past 16 years, the US sugar industry has become leaner and probably fitter. In the report produced by LMC International for American Sugar Alliance and openly disclosed during the annual symposium in early August, employment in the sugar industry has decreased by 47.5% over the period from 1993/94 to 2009/10 from 68,264 to 35,814 (table 1). Raw cane sugar sector shouldered the largest decrease (75.9%) compared with the beet sugar (26.6%) and sugar refining (29.3%) sectors. However, productivity, in terms of tons of domestically produced sugar increased by over 100% from 119 to 243 tons/employee over the period.…
