US Senate vote against repealing ethanol tax credits [Registered]
The US senate beat back a challenge to dispense with $ 6 billion ethanol subsidies enjoyed by the corn ethanol industry. The unsuccessful amendment was led by the Republican senator Tom Coburn with the support of 34 of 47 Republicans in the Senate. The 59-to-40 vote on 13th June was 20 short of what was needed. The majority vote comprised most Democrats and farm-state Republicans. The key driver behind this amendment is the crusade by Coburn and his allies against the dozens of tax credits in an effort to trim the federal deficit.
