US – GM sugar beets ok for the time being [Registered]

USDA has partially deregulated genetically engineered sugar beets that are resistant to the herbicide glyphosate as an interim measure while it completes a court-ordered environmental review. The decision enables growers to continue to harvest, process, store, transport and sell the biotech sugar beets as long as they comply with USDA permitting and notification requirements. Last summer, a federal judge issued an order halting the planting of genetically engineered sugar beets until USDA completed an environmental impact study on the effects of the beets on conventional crops.
