US Department of Energy funds cellulosic ethanol and biochemicals projects [Registered]

The US Department of Energy is funding up to $36 million for six small-scale projects in California, Michigan, North Carolina, Texas, and Wisconsin, that are largely to with developing effective pretreatment technologies for cellulosic feedstocks to facilitate release of sugars for subsequent use in biofuels production. In making this announcement in early, Secretary Chu noted “Projects such as these are helping us to diversify our energy portfolio and decrease our dependence on foreign oil,” The funding will help diversify DOE’s Biomass Program portfolio to include a breadth of fuels and chemicals beyond cellulosic ethanol and ensure that the Department’s research…
