Unjust cane payment system is strangling India’s sugar industry [Registered]
It would not be amiss to say that top two sugar producers in the world are totally let down by ineffectual policies. In Brazil it is the combination of laid back on the one hand, and counter-productive (whereby subsidised gasoline to check inflation left cane-based ethanol production at the mercy of market forces, subsequently adversely impacting the competitiveness of the industry with some 60 mills closing since 2010 and around 35 currently going through Chapter 11) on the other hand.
