Ukraine – sugar imports fall sharply in first quarter [Registered]

Ukraine imported only 2600 tonnes of beet sugar in the first quarter of 2011 with the major share supplied by Belarus, industry sources said. Imports of raw cane sugar under the 267,800 tonne TRQ (tariff rate quota) were pegged at zero compared with 21,800 tonnes imported in the first quarter of 2010. Industry sources said the sharp drop in imports under the TRQ was due to new rules for the distribution of licences for imports under the quota. Traders were able to apply for licences by March 22 and therefore did not import sugar under the TRQ so far.…
