Thailand’s sugarcane crop nears 100 million tonnes [Registered]

Thailand may harvest 99.4 million tonnes of sugarcane in the upcoming 2011/12 (Nov/Oct) season, up 4% from 95.36 million in 2010/11, according to preliminary estimates revealed by an official at the Office of the Cane and Sugar Board (OCSB). Crushing of the new crop is expected to begin mid-November, about two weeks early compared with last year. Recent floods and ongoing heavy rains have not caused any significant damage to the sugarcane crop, he said. Thailand produced a record 9.64 million tonnes of sugar, tel quel, in 2010/11.…
