Recovering the maximum amount of sucrose from molasses has been a major objective in the sugarcane industry for a long time. HC Prinsen Geerlings investigated melassigenic substances in cane molasses in 1892; Van der Linden in 1919 exhausted molasses by rotating them in bottles with sucrose crystals until equilibrium was reached. It was found that the ratio sucrose/water could be a function of the non-sucrose/ water ratio in exhausted molasses (Honig 1959).
