India – Rising number of debt-ridden cane growers committing suicides [Registered]

On 9th June, the Indian government approved an interest-free loan of Rs 6,000 crore (US$940 mln) to enable sugar mills help settle their debt with cane growers. It is apparent that in some states, payments to growers have not yet filtered through. While on the other hand, some factories are not buying cane from local farmers.
