Plant protein and pharmaceutical excipients producer Roquette plans to invest €25 million to upgrade its liquid and powder polyols plant in Lestrem, France, between 2022 and 2024 to boost the production of liquid and powder polyols. According to the company’s press release, the investment will strengthen its position as a leader in polyols and establish a strong, reliable supply in the long term.

Polyalcohols are widely used in the food industry, especially in candy and gum because they bring the sweet without the risk of cavities. Researchers at ICIQ (Tarragona, Spain) and ETH (Zurich, Switzerland) designed a process using metallic catalysts to produce sweeteners like mannitol or ribitol from widely available glucose or arabinose.
