Phosphorus (P) is an essential macronutrient for all living organisms and limits plant growth. Researchers from La Trobe University have uncovered a protein SPX4 that can sense the nutrient status plant P and alters gene regulation to either switch off or turn on P acquisition and to alter growth and flowering time. This discovery has the potential to reduce fertilizer P wastage.
