Sugar beet acreage in the Netherlands increased by 21% in 2017 from 71,000 to 85,000 hectares, according to the Central Bureau for Statistics.

The Dutch sugar co-operative Suiker Unie is to beet sugar production following the abolition of EU sugar quota in September, said CEO Albert Markusse, according to local press reports.

The average sowing date was April 4, or more than one week later than in 2014. The spring was relatively cold, dry and sunny. Northern areas were colder than normal while in the south it was significantly drier than average. It was also considerably sunnier than usual but this did not have a positive effect on the beet growth until June as the initial development phase is mainly dependent on the temperature. The growing point date was not reached until June 23, two weeks later than last year.

Dry weather and temperatures above freezing at the start of March permitted an early start to beet sowing, but progress was halted during the first week of April due to storms and rain. With sowing picking up the week after about 92% of the sowing had been completed by mid-April.
