Combination of eutectic solvents and genetic engineering advances cellulosic biofuels production [Registered]

the international team of researchers led by The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) have developed a process that leverages the genetic engineering of lignin and bio-derived deep eutectic solvents (DESs).

Eutectic solvents support extraction of pure lignin from lignocellulosic feedstocks [Registered]

Lignin can now be efficiently and cost-effectively separated from lignocellulosic feedstock such as sawdust, by using eutectic solvents. VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has developed solvents which are able to extract 50% of the lignin from wood in a pure form that retains its natural chemical structure during processing.
