Lignin to chemicals facilitated by metabolically engineered E. coli [Full subscriber]

Researchers at the Sandia National Laboratories in California have demonstrated a new technology based on bio-engineered bacteria that can make it economically feasible to produce chemicals from lignin.

Industrial chemicals produced by gasifying lignocellulosic feedstock [Registered]

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd has developed a method of manufacturing BTX chemicals by combining the gasification of lignocellulosic biomass, the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and aromatisation. Over 85% of the separated benzene exceeded 90% purity and around 50% of the separated toluene was over 70% purity.

Novel catalyst used to produce aromatic chemicals from lignin [Registered]

Using these new catalysts, arenols (phenol derivatives) were successfully deoxygenated to afford the corresponding arenes. In addition, aryl methyl ethers were converted selectively to arenols after demethylation with dihydrogen using the same catalysts.
