The listed fruit, sugar and starch group Agrana is to close its beet sugar factory in Leopoldsdorf next year due to significant drop in sugar beet production, making it unviable to support two factories, according to local press reports.

The fruit, starch and sugar company Agrana has signed a joint venture agreement with the US sugar producer Amalgamated Sugar Company for the construction of a betaine crystallization plant in the sugar factory Tulln (Lower Austria), according to a recent release from the company.
The Austrian sugar, starch and fruit company Agrana said it has suspended the negotiations for the acquisition of Serbia’s biggest sugar producer Sunoko.
Serbia’s competition regulator said it approved the acquisition of a majority stake in the country’s biggest sugar producer Sunoko by Austria’s food group Agrana, according to local press reports.
The Austrian food company Agrana has agreed to buy a majority stake in Serbia’s major sugar producer Sunoco from the Serbian agro-industrial conglomerate MK Group, the companies said in separate press releases on 29th June.
Especially in the Sugar segment, steadily declining market prices led to a significant drop in earnings. The Starch and Fruit segments have proved a stabilising influence for profitability, with the Starch segment contributing a slight year-on-year increase in EBIT, while a moderate EBIT decline in the Fruit segment was the result of one-time factors.
The natural betaine product, also known as trimethylglycine, is extracted from sugar beet molasses and available in two varieties: initially as liquid betaine molasses and later as a powdered option on a carrier.
