Leather-like material manufactured from silk proteins [Full subscriber]

Biomaterial composites based on reformulated silk protein offer new routes for tough and strong, environmentally friendly leather-like materials. Researchers at Tufts University School of Engineering have succeeded in developing a process for making silk-based leather that is scalable, amenable to digital manufacturing, thus enabling a wide variety of formats, and offering new pathways to sustainable production.

Researchers develop lignin-based composite for 3D printing process [Registered]

Scientists at the US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have created a new composite material to be used for 3D printing that makes use of lignin and which could spur a profitable new use of lignin.
