According to the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies, sugar production in Russia for 2022/23 is forecast at 6.5 million tonnes. This compares with 5.6 million tonnes produced last year. Fine weather has contributed to increased sugar beet production.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) increased its estimate for the country’s sugar imports in the 2022/23 season by nearly half a million (487,829 tonnes) short tonnes (442,551 tonnes) on Jul. 12.

2022/23 sugar output is expected to drop by 23% to 1.1 million tonnes, due mainly to the current Russian invasion, according to the latest attaché report from USDA.
Ukraine’s major beet sugar producer, Astarta, has completed sowing 33,000 hectares, almost the same acreage it sowed in 2021, reported Reuters.
The 2022/23 sugar output is forecast at 7.2 million tonnes by USDA in its latest report. It is marginally higher than the output (7.14 million tonnes) in 2021/22. With cane production forecast at 89.5 million tonnes, this suggests sugar recovery of less than 10%.
