Sugar consumption in Indonesia to rise by 3% in 2011 [Registered]

Total sugar consumption in Indonesia is likely to rise by more than 3% in 2011 to an estimated 5.17 million tonnes this year compared with 5.01 million tonnes, according to Gunaryo, director general of domestic trade at the trade ministry recently. In detailing the breakdown for 2011, Gunaryo noted that domestic and industrial use is likely to be 2,799,724 tonnes and 2,370,375 tonnes, respectively. Last month, industry body the Indonesian Sugar Council (DGI) said Indonesian demand for sugar would hit 4.6 million tonnes this year, little changed from a year ago.
