Sri Lankan government approves construction of a new sugar refinery [Registered]

The Sri Lankan government has approved the proposal to establish a sugar refinery at the Magam Ruhunupura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port (MRMR Port) in Hambantota, reported Ceylon Today. The establishment of the refinery was proposed by Shree Renuka Sugars Ltd, India and they have formed its subsidiary local company Lanka Sugar Refinery Company (Private) Limited. Total investment for the refinery is expected to be US$ 220 million. Initially, the plant will refine 2000 t raw sugar/day, rising to up to 3000 tonnes/day subsequently. Raw sugar will be imported.
