Squabble over abolition sugar quotas in EU continues [Registered]

EU member states are squabbling once again on Commission proposals to phase out sugar quota in October 2015. At Farm Council meeting on 30 January, Poland, Portugal, Hungary and Lithuania all reiterated their demand to retain quota systems until up to 2020, warning of market imbalances if production controls were lifted. France, Austria, Finland and the Netherlands agreed that sugar quotas should continue beyond 2015. However, German agriculture secretary Robert Kloos argued that quotas were “unnecessary”, distorted the market and were “incompatible” with EU free market rules.
