South African Sugar Association calls for import tariffs [Registered]

The South African sugar industry is calling on the government to introduce import tariffs. SA Sugar Association executive director Trix Trikam, speaking to the local media recently, said that the industry was going through a rough patch. Cheap sugar imports, largely from Brazil, is having an adverse impact on the industry. Trikam blamed these imports for the drastic reduction in the number of small cane growers from 50,000 to 25,500.
