South Africa lowers sugar production forecast [Registered]

South Africa’s 2010/11 sugar output is estimated at 1.964 million tonnes, down from a previous 1.998 million tonnes forecast, the latest estimate by the South African Sugar Association showed. Sugarcane crush was forecast at 16.43 million tonnes from a previous estimate of 16.866 million tonnes, according to the industry association, which represents producers and millers of the sweetener in Africa’s biggest economy. South Africa this year faces a drought in the rain-dependent sugar growing area of KwaZulu Natal Province, which is seen weighing on output.
