Siemens develops a biobased alternative to ABS plastic [Registered]

Researchers at Siemens have developed an alternative to standard polystyrene-based acrylonitrite-butadiene-styrene (ABS) polymer made from biobased polymer and carbon dioxide. The new material is the result of a three-year project on funded by the German Research Ministry in cooperation with project partners from BASF, Munich Technical University, and the University of Hamburg. The new composite material is a mixture containing poly­hydroxybutyrate (PHB), which is made from renewable raw materials such as palm oil and starch.
