SASRI partners with Aracadia Biosciences to develop GM nitrogen use efficient cane cultivars [Registered]

Arcadia Biosciences and the South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI), recently signed an agreement to develop nitrogen use efficient (NUE) sugarcane cultivars. Under the deal, SASRI receives exclusive research rights to the use of Arcadia’s NUE technology in sugarcane in Africa. Arcadia’s NUE technology effectively involves genetic modification of the metabolic pathway involved in nitrogen utilization. Arcadia have already developed GM canola which uses two-thirds less nitrogen than conventional cultivars. Field trials over five years have been conclusive.
