Sampling of cane at mills [Registered]

In 1968 Buchanan reviewed the use of first expressed juice (FEJ) for the distribution of sucrose in cane consignments. Variable fibre % cane values, the lack of juice homogeneity and no incentive for growers to supply clean cane were some of its disadvantages. He also pointed out that with the advent of cane diffusion FEJ would not be available. Equipment designed for sampling and testing every consignment entering the factory was therefore installed at a South African mill for evaluation.
