Russian Customs Union to reduce sugar output in 2013/14 [Registered]

The Russian Customs Union comprising Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan is expected to reduced beet sugar output by about 14% in 2013/14 to 4.82 million metric tons, according to Andrei Bodin, executive director of the Sugar Producers’ Association of the three states. The 2012 output from the Union is estimated to be 5.6 million tonnes. Speaking at the sugar conference in Moscow on 18th March, Bodin said that sugar output is being reduced because of a lack of processing capacity and low prices, which are spurring farmers to switch to more profitable wheat and corn.
