Rise in beet sugar production drives global surplus [Registered]

A sharp rise in beet sugar production has helped to finally swing the market into surplus for the 2011/12 season after three years of deficits, merchant and analyst Czarnikow said in its recently published October Sugar Review. Beet sugar production increased by around “20% year on year” compared with the increase in cane sugar production of only 2%. The growth in beet sugar production is largely concentrated in Europe and Russia which have had favourable growth conditions and expansion in acreage. Czarnikow said beet sugar production is expected to grow by 6 million tonnes, raw value, in the 2011/12 season…
