Rapid cogen expansion in Brazil checked by inadequate incentives [Registered]

Expansion in energy demand in Brazil continues to drive power production in the renewable sector. Currently, of the 82% of electrical energy needs in Brazil are met from renewable sources, 73% is from hydroelectric sources and 5% from bagasse-based cogeneration. With limited scope for further expansion from hydroelectric sources, bagasse-based cogen offers a complimentary power source. With the growth in sugar and ethanol production continuing apace on the back of increased cane production, access to feedstock supply is not an issue.
