Production of biobased chemicals not always environmentally-friendly [Registered]

The perception that the production of biobased chemicals is kinder to the environment than their petrochemical equivalents is unlikely to stand up to scrutiny in some cases according to a new study on bio-based glutamic acid. The research led by Tijs Lammens at the University of Wageningen in the Netherlands was published online on 29th August ’11 in Environmental Science & Technology. Glutamic acid is an amino acid needed to make other useful molecules, including chemicals involved in plastics production.
