Price doubles as sugar shortage hits Burundi [Registered]

Sugar price in Burundi has doubled due to shortage. SOSUMO the sole local sugar producer has blamed a combination of high demand and unscrupulous wholesalers who have been creating artificial shortages. This year, SOSUMO produced over 20,000 tonnes of sugar against 18,937 tonnes in 2010. With annual consumption of 32,000 tonnes (according to the ISO figures), the country relies on imports to meet any shortfall. In 2010, it imported over 14,000 tonnes sugar.
