Plants produce specialized metabolites in its roots to manage microbial communities [Registered]

A joint study from the John Innes Centre and the Chinese Academy of Sciences has shed new light on the production of specialized metabolites by plants capable of selectively altering the microbial communities of the soil surrounding its roots to suit their own purposes. While the findings may be useful in engineering beneficial root microbiota for sustainable agriculture, they may also, in part, explain why plants have evolved such vast metabolic diversification.…
