Pilot plant to produce biobased adipic acid opens in California [Registered]

The US-based industrial biotech company Verdezyne has opened a pilot plant in Carlsbad, California to produce biobased adipic acid, a key component of nylon 6,6, which in fibre form is used for carpet, apparel and other textile applications. Dr. E. William Radany, president and CEO of Verdezyne, speaking to Biofuels Digest stated that they will be able to proceed to commercial scale in “18 months”. Feedstock sourced for the production on adipic acid is a variety of non-food based vegetable-oil-processing waste streams such as soap stock or fatty acid distillates.
