At the first ever Visayas muscovado sugar convention held recently in Bacolod City, a consultant to the fair trade industry, Hagung Hendrawan, said that the muscovado sugar industry which belongs to the specialty sugar sector, is growing by 22% annually in Philippines. According to the conference chair Ma. Florencia Logroño, SRA La Granja Agricultural Research and Extension Center OIC, there are 166 existing muscovado mills in the Visayas and four more up for operation, Antique has the most muscovado mills numbering to 146, Negros Occidental has eight, Negros Oriental – six, Ilolio – five, and Capiz – one.
