Abstract The high V1 demand from the back-end refinery and striving to be more energy-efficient has initiated an investigation into the evaporator performance of the Malalane sugar mill. Numerous factors, such as sufficient steam pressure, evaporator tube cleanliness and heat transfer area, impact an evaporator’s performance. However, with the wetting rates of the first-effect vessels being as low as 20 kg/h/tube, it was obvious that this problem needed to be solved first.
