The impact of improving irrigation scheduling for smallholder growers in Swaziland* [Full subscriber]

Abstract Smallholder sugarcane growers are essential in Swaziland for poverty alleviation and rural economic development. Total area under sugarcane in Swaziland is about 59 000 ha, with about 12 000 ha managed by a substantial number of smallholder growers (unpublished data1). Swaziland Sugar Association Technical Services conducted a study in 1998, which showed that smallholder growers did not follow any form of irrigation scheduling at all (unpublished data2). Irrigation scheduling is essential to meet crop water requirements and can help to reduce the cost of electricity use.
