The effect of Brix-free water in dry sugar cane leaf on cane juice quality [Full subscriber]

Sugar cane delivered to sugar mills increasingly contains more extraneous matter (EM). Processing cane stalks with EM causes a number of deleterious effects. However, when the moisture content of this EM is below a certain critical value of Brix-free water of 16%, these deleterious effects are masked. Consequently, laboratory tests were conducted to assess the effects of increased additions of both green and dry cane leaves and bagasse (as an alternate form of EM) on the issuing juice and cane quality, and on sugar recovery calculated from the commercial cane sugar (CCS) formula.
