The “beet” goes on – roundup ready sugar beet deregulated again in USA [Full subscriber]

The United States (US) uses just over 11 million short tons of sugar annually, with 43% of it processed from sugar beet, (Beta vulgaris L.). Prior to 2008, growers in the US produced conventional sugar beet. Growers rapidly adopted Roundup Ready sugar beet when seeds became widely available in 2008 because of its convenience and the technology allowed effective control of weeds using glyphosate. Growers typically use two applications of glyphosate and have excellent weed control, whereas three to four applications of conventional herbicides still required cultivation and hand weeding for acceptable levels of weed control in conventional sugar beet.…
