The application of process aids to improve the performance at sulfitation and refining sugar factories* [Full subscriber]

This paper reviews the use of speciality adsorbents in sugar mills and sugar refineries in order to improve productivity by minimising chemical consumption, enhancing colour removal and filterability. Different processes for sugar purification and their impact on sugar recovery will be evaluated and discussed. Case studies will be discussed to show benefits in the following areas: At sugar mills: 1. Reduction in sulfitation chemicals. 2. Reduced evaporator fouling. 3. Reduced sucrose losses. 4. Better quality sugar. At sugar refineries: 1. Improved fine liquor colour and refined sugar quality. 2. Increase in capacity due to better filtration and reduction of recycle.…
