R/evolutionary technologies : Diffusion in the sugarcane industry [Full subscriber]

Although the diffusion process was associated with sugarcane before 1900, industrial applications started in the 1960’s.  In 1962 industrial diffusers operated in Hawaii and Egypt.  As from 1970 bagasse and cane diffusion developed rapidly in Southern Africa. By 2010 more than 80% of the cane in South Africa was processed by cane diffusers. Data from Southern Africa show that cane diffusion achieves industrial sucrose extractions close to 98%, a value higher than that obtained with milling tandems.…
