Preparation and characterization of modified sugarcane bagasse and its application in sugar decolorization [Full subscriber]

A new adsorbent was prepared for sugar decolorization by the reaction between sugarcane bagasse (SB) and epichlorohydrin/ethylenediamine (EDA). The performance of the modified sugarcane bagasse (MSB) was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron micrographs (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The modification parameters were optimized as temperature of 80oC, reaction time of 5 h, EDA content of 27% and sodium bicarbonate content of 1.5%, which yielded 0.92% nitrogen content in MSB.
