NAFTA making waves in the world sugar trade † [Full subscriber]

The united States and Mexico are together the world’s third largest sugar market, with consumption estimated at 15 million tonnes, raw value. The full integration of the two countries’ sweeteners markets came into place in January 2008, after years of bilateral tensions which featured antidumping duties, discriminatory taxes and a WTO panel ruling. as a result of trade liberalization between the two countries, Mexico has seen US-bound sugar exports grow over the past couple of years, in part sustained by higher quantities imported from third countries, in a process known as backfilling. at the same time, there is potential for…
