Hawaiian commercial and sugar company – standing tall in producing sugar from sugarcane [Full subscriber]

In the 1960s, Hawaii was producing over 1 million tons of sugar from sugarcane annually. Unfortunately, owing to high labor cost, scarcity of fresh water, and low returns to processors, the sugarcane industry declined precipitously. Today, the Hawaiian and Commercial Sugar Company is the only surviving sugar producing entity in Maui, Hawaii with about 800 employees who currently produce just over 182,000 tons of sugar annually. This paper summarizes sugarcane production practices on the island of Maui.…
