Evaluation of hydrogen peroxide as a decolorizer in upstream juice products at a sugarcane factory* [Full subscriber]

Abstract Compared to sugarcane refineries, very little studies have been undertaken on the use of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at sugarcane factories to reduce color in upstream products.  Trials were undertaken at a Louisiana sugarcane factory to determine the effectiveness of H2O2 dosing on color reduction during juice clarification.  By measuring color at pH 4.0, 7.0, 8.5, and 9.0 as well as the color indicator value (color at pH 9.0/color at pH 4.0), it was observed that color formation and removal across clarification was more complicated than previously considered.  The direct application of H2O2 (up to 200 ppm per ton of…
