Abstract On October 1, 2017, the EU’s 50-year old sugar quota production system will come to an end, introducing a new dynamic between the European and global sugar markets. Currently, producers and consumers are insulated from the significant price fluctuations in the global market. The end of the quota system exposes every aspect of the sugar value chain to these global headwinds, while simultaneously increasing the level of volatility seen, for at least the short term.
