Development of a sugarcane transport route planning application in a geographical information system [Full subscriber]

The use of geographic information systems (GIS) to define the optimum alignment of a transport route, based on either minimised construction cost, operating cost or a cost saving compromise between different issues to consider, is widely accepted. The aim of this research was to develop a similar application to be used to identify the most cost effective haulage roads for bulk agricultural haulage from sugarcane field loading zones to the nearest sugar mill.
