Damage pattern of sugarcane internode borer Chilo sacchariphagus indicus (Kapur) in Tamil Nadu State, southern India [Full subscriber]

Damage by internode borer Chilo sacchariphagus indicus (Kapur) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) was assessed in 2008 in cane cv. Co 86032 in growers’ farms of M/s Sakthi Sugars Ltd., Erode district, Tamil Nadu State, India. Sample canes from selected fields were examined for symptoms of bore hole in visible top internodes, deadheart symptom or both. Infested cane tops were split open to examine symptoms of damage and larval feeding behavior. Infestation was in the range 6.4- 96.0% in 120- to 390-day-old crops.
