Comparison of methods for determining thrips (Fulmekiola serrata) damage and implications for resistance screening [Full subscriber]

The sugarcane thrips, Fulmekiola serrata Kobus, is a pest of the South African sugarcane industry. One of the strategies to control the pest is by breeding and selecting resistant genotypes. The main objective of this study was to compare different methods of predicting thrips damage to establish a method for resistance screening. Thrips number count and phenotypic assessment of damage were compared. Ninety genotypes were planted in replicated field trials at the Mount Edgecombe and Kearsney research stations.
